This is a contract with God that you and He will work together to make sure that the sin involved will not take a ”leadership” role in your life. You are telling God, by repenting of something, that you will not succumb to the temptation of that sin by using the strength God makes available to you. This subject is covered in more depth here.

Literally, to change oneâ€(tm)s mind. The Greek and Hebrew words that are translated as repent can either mean a simple change of mind or a realization of sin with the accompanying resolve to reform. In some Bible translations, we find God repenting. In the original language, it simply means that God changed His mind. Technically, repentance is the change of mind and penance is the change of deeds. For example, realizing that you were wrong to steal something is repentance, while returning the stolen goods is penance.
