A very thin, pigmented cell layer directly beneath the retina. RPE cells lie between the photoreceptor cell layer of the retina and the choroid. The RPE obtains nutrients and oxygen from the choroid and provides these to the photoreceptor cells. It also carries waste products from photoreceptor cells for disposal in the choroid. The RPE provides vitamin A and survival factors to the retina (see survival factors).
