A control protocol that helps organise RTP connections. (Note: despite "TCP" in its name, RTCP usually flows over UDP, similar to RTP). RTCP is defined in the same documents as RTP. SASL (Simple Authentication and Security Layer / RFC 2222) – a generic deswcription of how authentication and other security services can be added to other protocols (avoids each protocol having to define their own authrntication / security techniques).
RTCP provides support for real-time conferencing of groups of any size within an intranet. This support includes source identification and support for gateways like audio and video bridges as well as multicast-to-unicast translators. It offers quality-of-service feedback from receivers to the multicast group as well as support for the synchronization of different media streams.
real-time conferencing protocol
RTCP is the starting point of RTP and controls participants in a session by sending control information for data distribution, monitoring, cross-media, synchronization and sender information.
Control protocol that provides feedback to the application
RTP Control Protocol. Protocol that monitors the QOS of an IPv6 RTP connection and conveys information about the on-going session.
Real-Time Control Protocol
An ITU protocol that provides status feedback from senders to receivers.
the control protocol for RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol). It is used to periodically transmit control packets to participants in a streaming multimedia session. RTCP's primary function is to provide feedback on the quality of service being provided. This feedback may be used to scale back the sender for flow-control reasons or to keep from congesting the network.
