A 21-pin AV connector commonly used on televisions and VCRs. Not all Scart sockets are the same - some are wired for S-Video, some are wired for RGB, some are wired for ordinary composite video, some are wired for stereo sound. To add to the confusion, some are AV IN sockets, some are OUT sockets, others can be both. Special care, therefore, must be taken to use a Scart plug that is correctly wired for the socket you are using, and for what you want to do. Most cables that are scart at one end and phono at the other end are switchable as to purpose on the scart connector - IN referring to video IN to the device with the scart socket, OUT referring to video OUT from that device.
The Euro A/V SCART cables are the most common way to connect televisions, DVD players and video recorders and carry both audio and video information. They are bi-directional so information can be sent both ways through the cable.

aka Euroconnector or even in some very old cases Peritel. A 21-pin connection between audio-visual components, carrying sound, vision and other signals. An RGB Scart is held by many to give the best picture quality for most people hooking up a DVD player to a TV set. Not all Scart cables are fully-wired - some have only the basic picture and sound connections made, while others are designed to carry video only. For more on this see entry under RGB.
The large rectangular shaped objects on the rear of most European televisions are a form of television input that can operate in a variety of ways - a composite, RGB or S-Video signal can be passed through a SCART cable depending on what type of SCART socket you have on your television. With a suitable TV SCART also allows auto-switching when the connected device (e.g. DVD player) is activated.
