A tumour of the nerve sheath (fatty covering of the nerves). Can occur in the major nerves of the head or the peripheral nerves (outside the brain and spinal cord). One of the commonest sites is the main nerve for hearing, the acoustic nerve. Schwannomas are usually benign, but can rarely be malignant.
Well-demarcated, benign lesion consisting of a fibroblastic proliferation of the nerve sheath cell (Schwann cell) producing distinctive patterns referred to as Antoni A and Antoni B tissue.
A tumor derived from the cells of the myelin sheath that surrounds many nerve cells.
A type of benign brain tumor that begins in the Schwann cells that produce the myelin that protects the acoustic nerve (the nerve of hearing).
