SOx Emission Control Area. A geographical area designated by the IMO as an area where strict controls on sulphur emissions from vessels are required. Specifically, the sulphur content of fuel oil used on board ships must not exceed 1.5%. Alternatively, ships can be fitted with an exhaust gas cleaning system, or use any other technological method to limit SOx emissions. The rules are set out in Marpol Annex VI.
