by second class conveyance; "we traveled second class"
In Boy Scouts, the second rank of achievement after Tenderfoot.
The Second Passenger Class was abandoned first by the Midland Railway, then by the Great Western and Caledonian and eventually by all railways (except for Continental boat trains) until third class was re-named second under nationalisation. The LNWR was one of the later companies to abandon second: in 1910 north-to-west trains with through carriages for the Central Wales line were three-class for Central Wales and two-class for the West of England. See Passenger Class.
Second-class mail in the postal rate system; covers periodicals.
Second Class is a rank attainable by a Scout in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), and ranks above Tenderfoot and below First Class. A Scout can work on the requirements for the Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks at the same time, but must be earn in sequence. The Second Class badge has a yellow horizontal scroll with the words of the Boy Scout motto "Be Prepared," the ends turned up, and a knotted rope hanging from the bottom.
