The name Senegambia refers, even before the Senegambia Confederation, to the geographic region covering the present republics of Senegal and Gambia, covering the watershed of the Senegal River and Gambia River, indeed as the name of a British colony 25 May 1765 - 30 January 1779, broken up when only Senegal was retaken by France.
