Shalem was the Canaanite god of dusk, sunset, and the end of the day. The name *shalem, which is a Semitic root meaning Wholeness (and later extended to the concept of Peace as creatures and buildings are only whole in peacetime), is given to the god from the sense of the wholeness / completion of the day.
