Lac is produced by insects who secrete the resin. It is collected from the small branches of trees and called "stick lac". After cleaning it is called "seedlac," further refining creates shellac. Shellac is also the basis of french polish.
A wood finish extracted from the secretions of an Asian insect; fast-drying and usually waxed for additional protection.
This is a yellow resin used in making varnish and formed from secretions of the LAC insect.
commercially cleaned lac made into flakes or sheets. Lac is the yellowish/reddish-brown resinous substance produced from the epidermal glands of the lac insect, Tacchardia lacca. Lac is a resin that has many industrial and scientific uses.
lac purified by heating and filtering; usually in thin orange or yellow flakes but sometimes bleached white
a thin varnish made by dissolving lac in ethanol; used to finish wood
Resin flakes dissolved in alcohol used as a finish for wood.
A coating made from purified lac dissolved in alcohol, often bleached white.
A material made from Bees (the Lac Bug) used to Seal surfaces from moisture, mildew, etc but primarily used for Interior surfaces
A traditional finish made from a resin produced by the secretions of an insect known as the "lac bug" (Laccifer Lacca), indigionous to India and Thailand. The secretions are deposited on tree branches by cocoon- producing females. The branches are harvested, the resin extracted by heat, and refined to varying degrees of clarity. The extracted resin forms a taffy-like consistency and, traditionally, was shaped and allowed to dry in the form of a "shell". Modern techniques roll the resin and allow it to dry in the form of a thin sheet. The sheet is then broken up into flakes. The flakes are dissolved in alcohol to produce shellac finish. Some of the finest museum-quality finishes are produced from shellac, using a technique known as French polish.
A substance produced by the lac insect. Soluble in alcohol and used in French Polish etc.
A preparation of lac, usually dissolved in alcohol, and used chiefly as a wood finish.
Derived from a natural resinous substance called Lac. A sealer and finish for floors, for sealing knots, and other purposes. (see Shellac Characteristics.)
A natural resin dissolved in alcohol, used for finishing furniture. The mixture dries quickly, after which it may be rubbed down to a fine satiny polish. Shellac finishes are easily damaged by moisture and heat. When padded instead of brushed on, produces the finish known as French Polish
A resinous substance used in various varnishes and fixative, derived from the secretion of the lac insect native to Asia. Synthetic versions are also available. See also fixative.
A material used to seal finished mosaic creations.
The base of french polish which, when built up in a thickness, acquires a deep lustre. Colour depends on the type used.
Alcohol-soluble, clear to orange-colored resin derived from lac. (Lac is a substance secreted by insects on tree branches, mainly in India.) Used as a sealer and clear finish for floors, for sealing knots, and in "alcohol-based" primers. Thinner is denatured alcohol.
A type of lacquer or finish used to preserve signatures on baseballs.
A transparent coating made by dissolving lac, a resinous secretion of the lac bug (a scale insect that thrives in tropical countries, especially India), in alcohol
A finish produced from a combination of alcohol and resins excreted by the Lac Beetle. Has good ambering, may become tacky when subjected to high humidity and lacks the high abrasion resistance of more modern finishes. Generally low in cost, this finish may water spot but is easy to use.Dries to tack free in 24 hours, reaching full cure in 30 days.
An alcohol soluble natural resin widely used in flexography inks.
A natural resin, usually in the form of thin flakes, that is derived from a resinous substance called lac; shellac is used to seal, finish and maintain furniture (antique). May be used as a rust sealer.
A resinous varnish obtained from the lac insect and used in japanning.
An oil-base finish used as a filler and sealer. Produced in orange and white.
The resinous material secreted by an insect that feeds upon the twigs of certain trees in India. It is soluble in alcohol to form liquid shellac, which is used as a sealer and finishing material for wood.
Derived from a resinous substance called Lac. Used as a sealer and finish for floors, for sealing knots, and other purposes- A natural resin, usually in the form of thin flakes.
A yellow resin formed from secretions of the LAC insect, used in making varnish.
A natural resin, usually in the form of thin flakes, that is derived from a resinous substance called lac. Shellac is used to seal and finish floors, seal knots, etc.
Natural resin soluble in alcohol. The mixture may be brushed on or padded on, and dries quickly, after which it is susceptible to fine satiny polish by rubbing down. The padding produces the high-gloss brittle finish known as French polish. Shellac finishes are easily damaged by moisture and heat.
Refined version of lac, a resin produced in thin flaky layers or shells, which is dissolved in alcohol and used to make shellac.
