Are conditions that differentiate an individual student from a class of students rather than conditions that exist across a class of students. Also known as unusual circumstances.
Extenuating family circumstances that were not addressed on your FAFSA, but which you would like VSAC and the colleges to consider in determining your eligibility for aid. A letter of explanation, detailing events, expenses, etc., that warrant special attention, should be sent to each office reviewing your application(s) for aid.
A college's financial aid administrator may consider special circumstances that could affect your EFC. These may include unusual medical or dental expenses, tuition expenses for younger children in private schools, or an unemployed parent. Many colleges will encourage families to make the financial aid office aware of the situation in writing. Maintain regular contact with your school's financial aid administrator.
On occasion, the Financial Aid Administrator has the flexibility to review a student's financial aid based on some "special circumstances." These could include unusually high medical or tuition expenses, or recent unemployment.
If your family experiences a loss of income, natural disaster, divorce/separation, change of employment, or a family death; the financial aid office can re-evaluate your eligibility.
In some situations, a court order or a written agreement between the parents may also benefit the child. For example, if the paying parent transferred the family home to the other parent, without being compensated, so the children would not have to move, the amount in the guidelines may not be fair. Both parents would have to agree that this is the case or a court would have to rule on the matter.
Special Circumstances (also abbreviated SC) is a 'secret service'-type organisation that exists within the fictional anarchist utopian science fiction civilisation known as the Culture (which forms the background of several novels and shorter works of Iain M. Banks).
