Payment of support for one spouse provided by the other spouse from the future income or earnings of the paying spouse. In Minnesota alimony is called “spousal maintenance” rather than “alimony” Spousal maintenance payments usually terminate upon the death of either spouse or the remarriage of the person receiving spousal maintenance. Payments received are usually taxable to the spouse who receives the maintenance, and deductible by the spouse who pays.
