A city and kingdom in India during the lifetime of the Buddha. It became a major center of the buddhist order's activity, as a retreat was acquired from the Prince Jeta of Sravasti near the city. This retreat became one of the buddha's favorite resting places during the rainy seasons. The area continued to be a center of buddhist activity after his death. It is cited as the location where many sutra s were expounded.

Srāvastī or Sāvatthī (Chinese: 舍衛), a city of ancient India, was one of the largest cities during Gautama Buddha’s lifetime. The city was located in the fertile Gangetic plains in the present day’s Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh.
