When making Family Court orders about children, the court usually prefers to leave children in living arrangements they are used to and have been in for some time. This is called "maintaining the status quo". This assumes the court finds the status quo in the best interests of the child. The status quo may change if the children are judged as being at risk of harm or abuse or there is another reason the court thinks other arrangements are in the best interests of the children
Existing state of affairs at a particular time.
Refers to the current policies or situations, as they exist without the affirmative. For example: the US embargo that is currently in place against Cuba is the status quo. If the affirmative advocated lifting the embargo it would be different than the status quo. So every time a team referred to the status quo, they would be referring to the world in which the embargo does exist.
