Paths over which vigorous midlatitude cyclones are most frequently observed. For diagnostic purposes, the variance in the 2-6 day period band is often used to define the storm track.

1. A region in which the synoptic eddy activity is statistically and locally most prevalent and intense. It also roughly corresponds to the mean trajectory of the cyclones in winter. In winter, there are two storm tracks in the Northern Hemisphere centered at about 45°N, one over the Pacific Ocean and the other over the Atlantic Ocean. There is one storm track in the Southern Hemisphere over the South Indian Ocean region at about 50°S prevalent throughout most of the year. 2. The path followed by a meteorological phenomenon, for example, a center of low atmospheric pressure, a severe thunderstorm tornado.

Storm tracks are the relatively narrow zones in the Atlantic and Pacific along which most Atlantic or Pacific extratropical cyclones travel.
