Like Suboxone ®, Subutex ® is mainly used in opiate detoxification to inhibit the craving for opiates and minimize withdrawl symptoms. The primary active ingredient in Subutex ® is buprenorphine. Because buprenorphine is a partial opioid agonist, its opioid effects are limited compared with those produced by full opioid agonists, such as oxycodone or heroin. Subutex ® also contains naltrexone, an opioid antagonist.
