the ultimate 'void' or 'emptiness' of Mahayana philosophy; total impermanence.
Sunyata, or emptiness, is empty of subject-object relationship. Nonexistent subject, nonexistent object. Perceiver and perceptions do not exist. As far as the groundwork is concerned, there is no definite ground. As long as there is definite ground on the spiritual quest,it becomes a struggle, a deliberate attitude of achievement. And once we begin to be aware of our process of searching as an ambitious struggle, a struggle with ideas, a struggle with theology, concept, which is perpetually creating samsaric mind rather than the spiritual path. The spiritual path becomes religion from that point of view, pejoratively speaking. ~ Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche
Emptiness; The belief that all phenomena are dependent on and caused by other phenomena, thus without intrinsic essense.
(Sanskrit, Buddhism) the condition of emptiness, especially as applied to conceptual categories which are said to "dependently co-arise" with each other because they are empty, it is particularly associated with the Buddhist philosopher Nagarjuna.
Literally, emptiness. When we examine the sensory phenomena we find that they cannot be grasped or delineated. They are empty of self-being. This is neither nihilism nor a denial of the sensory realm; rather, emptiness is the interdependence of all phenomena. For example, a pencil cannot be taken out of its surroundings, or exist, without someone perceiving it. The pencil is empty of self-being. Its existence is dependent on the existence of everything else. This interdependence is known as pratityasamutpada.
Sanskrit; sunnata (Pali); literally, "emptiness"; a central Buddhist idea which states that all phenomena are "empty," i.e. dependent and conditioned on other phenomena and therefore without essence; Theravadins applied this idea to the individual to assert the non-existence of a soul; Mahayanists later expanded on this idea and declared that all existence is empty; emptiness became the focus of the Madhyamika school of the Mahayana Buddhism; the notion of emptiness has often led to Buddhism being wrongfully confused with a nihilistic outlook.
Void. The 'Emptiness' of Mahayana philosophy, which contains all things. Empty even of the concept of Emptiness.
