switched virtual circuits. A virtual connection set up on demand via a signaling protocol.
Virtual connection between two variable endpoints on the network. The switch makes at the beginning of the call, and breaks at the end of the call. A frame relay and ATM networking term.
A connection established via signaling. The user defines the endpoints when the call is initiated.
Virtual circuit that is dynamically established on demand and is torn down when transmission is complete. SVCs are used in situations where data transmission is sporadic. Called a switched virtual connection in ATM terminology.
Switched Virtual Circuits. virtual link, with variable end-points, established through an ATM network. With a SVC, when the call is initiated, the use r defines the end-points that are subsequently terminated at the end of the call. With a Private Virtual Circuit (PVC), the end-points are predefined by the network manager. A single virtual path may support multiple SVCs.

The specific path provided in support of the SVC is determined on a call-by-call basis and in consideration of both the end points and the level of congestion in the network. SVCs are used extensively in X.25 networks. SVCs also are provided for in Frame Relay network theory, but have not been implemented, because permanent virtual circuits (PVCs) provide the same function and are much less complex to provision. Switched Virtual Circuit A term found in frame relay and ATM networking in which a virtual connection, with variable end-points, is established through an ATM network at the time the call is begun; the SVC is de-established at the conclusion of the call. See also Permanent Virtual Circuit.

A logical connection between two points that is established dynamically and exists during transmission only. In ATM networks, the SVC connection is established via signaling. End systems transmit their UNI 3.1 or 4.0 signaling request via the Q.2931 signaling protocol.
Switched Virtual Circuit. A channel established on demand that is used for transferring information between two locations. The connection is established by network signalling, and lasts only for the duration of the transfer. It is the data communications equivalent of a dialed phone call.
Switched Virtual Circuit is an L2TP-compatible media on top of which L2TP is directly encapsulated. SVCs are dynamically created, permitting tunnel media to be created dynamically in response to desired LNS-LAC connectivity requirements.
