Taras (Τάρας) was, according to Greek mythology, the son of Poseidon and of the nymph Satyrion.
Taras, is a male Eastern European name, used particularly in Ukraine. It is probably derived from the name of the city of Taras in Magna Graecia, currently Taranto. The city is in turn named after Taras, son of the god Poseidon.
