Definitions for "Upali"
One of the ten main disciples of the buddha who was noted for his understanding of the monastic law and discipline (Vinaya). He is said to have recited the code of rules from memory at the First Council held at Rajagrha. See disciples, Surangama Sutra . upasaka: A male lay adherent who vows to observe the five precepts.
Upali (Sanskrit उपालि upāli) was a monk in the order of Buddha. Before joining the order, its interesting to note he worked as a barber. He asked if a person of "low birth" such as he could join the order, Buddha on purpose ordained him before the princes and asked the princes to pay homage to Upali, who by then had become an Arhant with Buddha's sermons while Buddha was getting a hair cut.
