List of travelers waiting for people to cancel reservations for a flight that is sold out.
A list of applicants who, though qualified for admission at a particular school, are not quite as attractive (in one way or another) as those who are initially offered admission. This occurs in April and typically only at selective schools. Waitlisted candidates are usually given the opportunity to decide whether or not they wish to wait for a final decision. Those who elect to stay on the "wait list" are still encouraged to accept another school’s offer of admission, since there is no guarantee of being admitted from the wait list. Students eventually moved from the wait list to the admit list have the opportunity to decide which college to attend.

A sequential computerized list of students wishing to register in a course that is filled.
A list of applicants who may be considered for acceptance if there is still space after admitted students have decided whether or not they'll attend.
A list of passengers requesting seats on full flights that might become available as a result of cancellation. Airline programs' elite-level members are often offered priority waitlisting.
