A characteristic of human nature is the sense of inner longing and desire, often for what we cannot tell. Deep within is a constant craving and desire which seems not be satisfied by any finite thing, and so the longing persists. The sacred tradition calls this desire eros and speaks of its origin in God. Eros is a divine implant and can only be filled, it is said, by the infinitude of God's own being. All other lesser desires continue only to leave us hungry and ultimately unsatisfied.
