A cold ocean current, also called the Arctic current, which flows south along the Labrador coast of Canada, through the Davis Strait to the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, where it divides. The eastward branch joins the North Atlantic Current, the westward branch flows into the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
A North Atlantic Ocean current setting southeastward along the east coasts of Baffin Island, Labrador, and Newfoundland.
cold south-flowing current along coast of eastern Canada.
a cold ocean current flowing southward from Baffin Bay along the Labrador coast and turning east after joining the Gulf Stream
An ocean current that flows southward from Baffin bay, through the Davis Strait, southeastward past Labrador and Newfoundland. East of the Grand Banks, the Labrador Current meets the Gulf Stream, and the two flow east separated by a cold wall.
A cold, strong ocean current flowing parallel to the east coast of Labrador.
The western boundary current of the North Atlantic subpolar gyre. The current receives considerable input of Arctic Surface Water originating from the East Greenland Current and supplied through the West Greenland and Baffin Currents. Its mean transport is close to 35 Sv (35 × 106 m3 s−1). The current is strongest in February when it carries 6 Sv more water than in August. It is also more variable in winter, with a standard deviation of 9 Sv in February but only 1 Sv in August. Near the Grand Banks it forms the polar front, also known as the cold wall, with the northward flowing Gulf Stream, with which it shares the shedding of eddies. The cold water of the Labrador Current allows icebergs from western Greenland to travel as far south as 40°N, the latitude of southern Italy.
Ocean current flowing south along West Greenland and Labrador coasts and east of Newfoundland uniting with the Gulf Stream in the area of the Grand Bank. Its cold waters meeting with the warm waters of the Gulf Stream cause the frequent fogs of this part of the North Atlantic.
The Labrador Current is a cold current in the north Atlantic Ocean which flows from the Arctic Ocean south along the coast of Labrador and passes around Newfoundland, continuing south along the east coast of Nova Scotia. It is a continuation of the West Greenland Current and the Baffin Island Current.
