The player immediately to the dealer (or button)'s left; so called because he is the player who received the first card during the initial deal. Also called age or edge.

The player whose table position is directly to the left of the dealer. Because this player is to the left of the dealer they are the first player to be dealt in. Their hand is the "eldest" hand because they have held it for the longest time.
