A database is held in one or more database files. There is an initial file, and subsequent files are called dbspaces. Each table, including its indexes, must be contained within a single database file. See also: dbspace.

A file reserved for the storage of database objects, such as the data dictionary, user tables, and indexes. One database file is required for each ORACLE database system; more can be added at any time.
