Based on either the Australian postcode or overseas country of a studentÕs permanent home residence at the time of enrolment for the current year. Within Tasmania regions are based on postcodes 72... for North, 71... for South, and 73... or 74... for Northwest. Within these categories, Urban is 0-20km from the city centre, Suburban 20-40km, Satellite includes towns on the 40km border of the city, and Rural includes all postcodes that fall outside 40 km.

Jurisdictional division of city schools. The city's public schools are grouped in 10 regions, each headed by a superintendent, appointed by the chancellor. Regions are responsible for student placement, as well as personnel and business operations for the schools under their umbrella. Regional offices house a parent resource center to respond to parent concerns.
