Aside from its geometric meaning, linear describes systems in which an output is directly proportional to an input. In particular, a linear elastic system is one in which the internal displacements are (at equilibrium) directly proportional to applied forces.

It is a term used for delivering an output which is directly proportional to the input, as in a linear circuit or a linear amplifier.

When changes occurring to the output of a device reflect the same proportional changes occurring at the input. Lo-Z - Short for the Low Impedance. A signal impedance of 500 ohms or less.

of a circuit or device having an output that is proportional to the input; "analogue device"; "linear amplifier"

If the input amplitude is increased by a factor of, say 1.2, then the output amplitude increases by a factor of 1.2, no more and no less. This is the ideal for all parts of a sound system, since no distortion is introduced.

A relationship between two numerical quantities is called linear if any change in one quantity implies a constant proportional change in the other.

output that is a continuous amplified version of its input. That is, the output is a predetermined variation of its input.

A term describing the output-amplitude versus input-amplitude characteristics of transducers and signal-processing devices. A linear device or medium is one whose input and output amplitudes have the same ratio at all signal levels. For example, if an amplifier is linear, doubling the input signal will double the output signal amplitude, regardless of the original input signal level. If at more or less than a factor of two, the amplifier would be called nonlinear at those amplitudes. The use of the term "linear" comes from a graph that is often called the transfer characteristic of the device in question. Linear means that the graph is a straight line, while nonlinear means that it either has curves or one or more angles in it. A device can have both linear or nonlinear operating regions. Restricting operation to the linear section avoids distortion, however.
