In military science, defense (or defence) is the art of preventing an attack, or minimizing the damage of an attack, e.g. by preventing an enemy from conquering territory.
In first-person shooter (FPS) games, defense, in its simplest form, is the protection of a certain element or location in order to gain an advantage, either through passively waiting, or being active. Waiting would require the player to stay in a location overlooking a certain spot, in anticipation of an element (e.g. items), event (e.g. bomb-planting), or in most cases, an opposition. Being active requires constructive actions, for instance in a real time strategy (RTS) based FPS, the player on defense would construct various defensive buildings, or would scout to prepare for an attack.
