A British law, first passed in 1715, which authorised magistrates and other officials to break up "riots and tumults" of twelve or more people. When faced with a riot, a magistrate was legally required to read the act which would then indemnify the magistrate and those under his orders from prosecution for any actions they subsequently took to break up the riot, particularly any maiming or killing of rioters. Legally, after the act had been read, the magistrate was supposed to allow an hour for the crowd to disperse.

The British Parliament brought in the Riot Act in 1715 to prevent civil disorder. It imposed on magistrates the duty of attending the scene of a riot or potential riot in order to read the act.

Riot Act is Pearl Jam's seventh studio album, released on November 12, 2002. Riot Act reached #5 in the US and #34 in the UK. It produced the relatively popular single "I Am Mine," but only sold 166,000 copies in its first week of release.
