Individual television stations are usually granted licensees by the FCC to use a particular section of the radio spectrum (a channel) through which they send their signals. TV stations in densely populated metro areas usually have only one transmitter. TV stations in more spread-out, rural areas may use a microwave relay network to a number of transmitters in the region. The Albuquerque market is an excellent example of a microwave network.
