A comparatively rare element occurring most abundantly in the mineral chromite. Atomic weight 52.5. Symbol Cr. When isolated it is a hard, brittle, grayish white metal, fusible with difficulty. Its chief commercial importance is for its compounds, as potassium chromate, lead chromate, etc., which are brilliantly colored and are used dyeing and calico printing. Called also chrome.

Chromium (Cr) is a steel-gray, lustrous, hard, metallic element, and takes a high polish. The addition of a minimum of 12% chromium to steel makes stainless steel resist rust, or "stain-less" than other types of steel. The chromium in the steel combines with oxygen in the atmosphere to form a thin, invisible layer of chrome-containing oxide, called the "passive film." The film self-repairs in the presence of oxygen if the steel is damaged mechanically or chemically, and thus prevents corrosion from occurring.

An alloying element that is the essential stainless steel raw material for confeffing corrosion resistance. A film that naturally forms on the surface of stainless steel self-repairs in the presence of oxygen if the steel is damaged mechanically or chemically and thus prevents corrosion from occurring.

A hard, brittle, semi-gray metal. Uses includes alloys and plating element on metal and plastic substrates for corrosion resistance. Protective coating for automotive and equipment accessories. Hazard: Chromium compounds are suspected of producing tumors of the lungs, and nasal cavity. Corrosive action on the skin and mucous membranes. If exposure continues, perforation of the nasal septum may result.

When used as an alloying element, chromium increases the hardenability of steel and in association with high carbon gives resistance to wear and abrasion. Chromium has an important effect on corrosion resistance and is present in stainless steels in amounts of 12% to 20%. It is also used in heat-resisting steels and high duty cast irons.

Added to increase the hardenability of steel. A strong carbide former, so is present in quenched and tempered engineering steels, up to 3.5%, ball bearing steel, 1-1.5%, tool steels, (up to 12% in cold-working die steel) and in creep and heat resisting steels. When steels contain 11% or more of chromium they are termed stainless because of their corrosion resistance which is due to the thin passive chromium-rich oxide film which forms on the steel surface.

Chromium is used in low alloy steels to increase 1) resistance to corrosion and oxidation, 2) high temperature strength, 3) hardenability, and 4) abrasion resistance in high carbon alloys. Straight chromium steels are susceptible to temper embrittlement and can be brittle.
