Originated from the Arabic word meaning 'heathen' and used in Southern Africa as a derogatory term for a black person. It does not denote a tribe, and is used to refer to blacks from any tribe, but is not used when referring to people of mixed race or Indian origin.

Kaffir, or kafir, which once was a blanket term for black southern Africans (see South Africa Kaffir people), is now used exclusively as an ethnic or racial slur. The original meaning of the word was 'heathen'.
