Photographic paper is made by coating light sensitive emulsion onto paper so that prints can be produced. Black and white papers can be handled under red or yellow safelighting, colour papers must be handled in total darkness. There are many varieties and surface effects available. Some types of papers are: Fibre based: photographic emulsion is coated directly onto paper. Creates a high quality paper that takes more time and effort to process. Resin coated: paper is encased in polythene then the photographic emulsion is coated onto one side. Creates an economical paper that is quick to process. Graded: all the paper in one box will give prints of the same level of contrast. Variable contrast: paper which is sensitive to differing levels of yellow and magenta filtration so that by using filters the contrast levels of individual prints can be controlled.
