Department of Energy - A cabinet-level department of the United States government. It is responsible for the development of nuclear weapons material (plutonium, uranium and tritium). DOE also has responsibility for cleaning up nuclear and chemical wastes that were generated by U.S. nuclear weapons programs, including the management of the Hanford Site. DOE sponsors research and development of more efficient ways of energy production. It was created in 1977 and took over the functions of the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA). Prior to DOE and ERDA, the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) had the responsibility for the nuclear weapons complex.
