Conceptual Design is the first of the Acquisition Phase activities and is aimed at producing a clearly defined set of user requirements in functional terms at the system level.

The general outline of planned actions that will be taken to address a hazardous waste site, such as building a landfill cover system. The conceptual design is incorporated into detailed design documents during Remedial Design.

The first phase of design, in which drawings are the dominant tool and product. Usually, drawings in this phase are composed of simple, single-line floor plans, building sections, elevations, and site plans.

Design phase (also called Preliminary Design) that follows “Space Program/Space Planning,” and precedes “Schematic Design.” Based on the space program this phase typically includes overall building layouts and block diagrams per functional area. Read more about Conceptual Design.

A major stage in the design process, through which the project team translates the business requirements into a common language to be shared by users and developers, and describes the feature set and/or usage scenarios that the solution must encompass.
