A tactical statement of when and what critical milestones must be passed to attain objectives programmed for a specific period.

Different from a strategic plan (which sets forth the general strategies a program will use or initiatives it will undertake to achieve its objectives), an operational plan sets forth the specific projects or activities (consistent with the strategic plan) that will be conducted, and the timetable and resources needed for completing those projects or activities. Forest Practices Code of British Columbia Act states that within the context of area-specific management guidelines, operational plans detail the logistics for development. Methods, schedules, and responsibilities for accessing, harvesting, renewing and protecting the resource are set out to enable site-specific operations to proceed. Operational plans include forest development plans, logging plans, range-use plans, silviculture prescriptions and stand management prescriptions.
