Card Verification Code. A number printed on the back of MasterCard credit cards. By making this number a requirement when collecting card holder information merchants can reduce the risk of fraud and charge backs.

Card Verification Code - MasterCard term for the three-digit code printed next to the card number in the signature panel and used as part of the authorization process.

Cardholder Verification Code - encrypted data on a Visa card’s magnetic stripe

CARD VERIFICATION CODE. A unique check value encoded on the magnetic stripe of a card to validate card information during the authorization process. The card verification value is calculated from the data encoded on the magnetic stripe using a secure cryptographic process. This method is used by MasterCard.
