You are probably familiar with another old adage: "Never draw to an inside straight." And inside straight is a gutshot. For instance, if you have 4-5-7-8 you need a six to make a straight. In other words, you need to hit your cards right in the guts (in the middle). If you do, you will hit your gutshot, and chances are that you will put a bad beat on a rock.
