Area Navigation - A method of navigation that permits aircraft operations on any desired course within the coverage of station-referenced navigation signals or within the limits of self-contained system capability.

RNAV is the acronym for Area Navigation. RNAV provides enhanced navigation capability to the pilot. RNAV equipment can compute the aircraft position, actual track and ground speed and then provide meaningful information relative to a route of flight selected by the pilot.
