Any non-pisted area of skiable, and also un-patrolled snow. See also piste.
Used to describe uncharted ski areas.
(Jargon Rating= 4) Areas of snow not marked as official pistes and where there is no grooming. Good skiers and boarders aspire to ride off-piste but, in Europe, do so at their own risk - off-piste slopes are not marked, protected from avalanches or patrolled. Going out of bounds, away from the prepared runs (and the ski patrols) can mean great fresh unexplored runs.
Skiing out of a managed ski area - out of bounds
The area beyond the groomed runs of a ski area or backcountry away from developed ski areas.
skiing away from marked runs. can be dangerous, e.g. risk of avalanches, not patrolled
Areas outside of the marked areas and trails of the snow resort.
