John Calvin, a French theologian and reformer; born 1509, died 1564.

John (1509-1564): French Protestant theologian; took power in Geneva and founded a sort of theocratic republic. His doctrine is called Calvinism and had great influence in the Netherlands, France and Scotland. It was the most bourgeois variant of Protestantism (See Luther).
