L. dens, dentis = "tooth". Can refer to any number of tooth-shaped structures. Most commonly, the peg on the axis which articulates with a pit on the atlas. See fovea dentis.
The dens or odontoid process of the axis exhibits a slight constriction or neck, where it joins the body.
