An oily liquid or greasy substance making up the main bulk of the adipose tissue of animals, and widely distributed in the seeds of plants. See Adipose tissue, under Adipose.
Area of the disk or diskette containing information about files on the disk, clusters making these files, and free area on the disk. FAT keeps a track of all information on the disks and all relations between different pieces of information. A loss of FAT translates into loss of data, since the system will not be able to attribute data to specific files even if the data themselves will be intact.
File Allocation Table. A portion of all DOS formatted disks that contain information on the number of files and available storage space.
The File Allocation Table is a small area of the drive used as a catalogue of all existing files stored on the disk. Until recently, most systems used FAT16, but the most recent version of Windows 95 incorporates FAT32, which allows much larger drives to be formatted as a single partition.
