A running program--similar to a process on UNIX systems. A task is scheduled by the operating system and provides the framework in which threads run. The operating system recognizes tasks for managing memory protection, hardware resource limits, and accounting. A task consists of one or more teams.
An executable item (a TME resource) that can be run on any managed node transparently; this can be a shell script, a Perl script, a compiled program or any other kind of valid executable.
A Mach abstraction consisting of a virtual address space and a port name space. A task itself performs no computation; rather, it is the context in which threads run. See also "process"; "thread".
A selection in the portfolio of the Tivoli Privacy Manager console. Which tasks are displayed is controlled by the authorization role of the user logged into the console.

Generically, an activity or set of activities that might be defined as part of a process. When used within a phrase such as 'Standard Operational Task' it defines a well documented, controlled, proceduralised, and usually low risk, activity. The procedure controlling the manner in which the task is carried out would be subject to formal Change Control. Technical Observation Post A prearranged meeting of specialist technical support staff from within the IT support organisation brought together to focus on specific aspects of IT availability.
The smallest indivisible part of an activity that is needed to track a project, such that it becomes impractical, or of no benefit, to break down the activity any further.
A task identifies an activity for which a user wants to separately budget or monitor costs. Tasks allow a user the ability to further define a project into separate functions for which the user can separately budget and monitor expenditures. A user has the ability to define top-level task definitions for all project types.
In scheduling, the smallest unit of activity that G2 performs.

Marking a Task Complete
A subset of steps performed for an individual process. For example, a task would be adding-on purchased products and reactive patches to your operating system. Tasks can be divided into activities depending upon the task and the section. A complete task is all of the steps required to perform that task.

As defined in the BABAR Collaboration Services Policy: "It is expected that all institutions in the collaboration contribute to the ongoing operation of the experiment. These contributions include detector systems and core software operations and maintenance; coordination and management tasks; physics tools development and infrastructure support; Monte Carlo production; and a host of other jobs both in the operation of the detector and computing Reference Link (http://www.slac.stanford.edu/BFROOT/www/Organization/Administration/CommonTasks17.pdf)

An OpenSTA Test is comprised of one or more Task Groups which in turn are composed of Tasks. The Scripts and Collectors included in Task Groups are known as Tasks. Script-based Task Groups can contain one or multiple Tasks. Tasks within a Script-based Task Group can be managed by adjusting the Task Settings which control the number of Script iterations and the delay between iterations when a Test is run.
