The 1840 Constitution of the Kingdom of Hawaii was the second constitution in the Hawaiian Islands, for the sovereign state known as the Kingdom of Hawaii. Promulgated by Kamehameha III, the version of the Constitution of Hawaii established a constitutional monarchy subjecting even the king to certain principles of democracy. It superseded the 1839 constitution.
