Definitions for "Dow Jones Averages"
Market average indicators consisting (individually) of: (1) 30 industrial; (2) 20 transportation; and (3) 15 public utility common stocks. The composite average includes these 65 stocks collectively.
The oldest and most widely used measures of the overall condition of the stock market, each of the four averages is price-weighted and includes a few dozen widely held stocks. There are four Dow Jones Averages: Industrial, Transportation, Utilities, and Composite (the other three together).
The Dow Jones Company maintains several indices that are commonly used to show changes in the market. The three most common are the "Dow Jones Industrial Average," "Dow Jones Transportation Average," and "Dow Jones Utility Average." They consist of 30, 20, and 15 stocks respectively.
