The action of adding descriptor words or short phrases to items on the Web (such as a blog entry, an image, or a Web page/site) in an effort to describe and/or classify these items. Freetagging is most often associated with social software, such as blogs, wikis, social networking spaces (such as http://www.myspace.com myspace or the http://www.thefacebook.com thefacebook), and social software Web services (such as http://del.icio.us del.icio.us, http://www.flickr.com flickr or http://www.assort.org assort). The body of tags in a given environment comprise a folksonomy, or an informal classification system resulting from multiple individuals' freetagging practice.
