Definitions for "Gnawing"
An activity where an animal uses its teeth to repeatedly chew something. This is often done by rodents, who use their massive incisor teeth to gnaw away at wood for example (like the beaver which can actually fell trees by gnawing their trunks). Traces of gnawing activity are often found on fossils, where tree trunks or bones have been gnawed and the marks left behind. These then become trace fossils.
