Definitions for "Greats"
Quaint (and now archaic) term covering (if I recall) classics, history and possibly other stuff. More formally known as Literae Humaniores. In Butterworth's time (and to a lesser extent today), British universities, especially Oxford, did not offer subjects leading directly to employment in some field. Greats would be a typical undergraduate degree for someone intending to to become a lawyer (or even a doctor!).
