Histiocytes is a synonym for macrophages. These cells are found in numerous tissues including the skin, liver, lung, lymphatic glands, spleen, bones and the brain. They are derived from blood monocytes after the latter leave the blood and enter tissues.

Histiocytes are also known as connective tissue macrophages. They can be fixed or wandering.
